Okay I think I may be getting closer to the issue. (at least I can hope!) remember I said It would freeze on creating sound caches for the first time? well I managed to (on this latest install) to get it to the point where it loaded the loading splash screens, but stuck doing nothing with creating sound cache.

The interesting point here is in my config folder, I only have the two files:

ingamedialogconfig.vdf
serverbrowser.vdf

But no voice_input.wav.

Is that either not appearing because the sound caches won't load, or is this part of the reason sound caching won't load.

Howdy, I am the coder Hawke promised, I don't have many bright ideas I'm afraid.

I don't have the voice_input.wav in my config file, so that may well have been created by another game/mod on Hawke's machine.

I also have a console entry regarding 'CHudHintKeyDisplay', so let's not worry about that.

Would you mind changing your BG2 Startup Options in Steam (right click on BG2 2.3 on Games list, Properties, Set Launch Options) to "-dev -condebug". This will make the console output a bit more interesting, and write it to a log file ("console.log") in your BG2 2.3 directory (in Steamapps/Sourcemods or wherever). If you could then try the game again, and post the console.log somewhere for us to look at (it shouldn't contain any personal details, but you may want to check before doing so).

If you think the issue may be with sound, it might be worth adding " -nosound" to the end of the launch options, and seeing if anything different happens like that (and let us know)

I'm not quite clear when the game is getting stuck for you, could you elaborate on the steps you take when you run it, so we can compare what we might expect console.log to say, to what it says for you.

Sorry I can't be more help, but hopefully these steps will lead us to a solution.

If you have any concerns about the Launch Options, check you this page on the value wiki: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wik ... ne_Options

Hi Melon, basically it gets to "loading" with the new map splash screen of America, before it has loaded the menu to be able to click on stuff. stuck forever on "loading" bottom right.

Here is a copy of the console.log, after running
CSoundEmitterSystem: Registered 5314 sounds
Plugins: found file "checkers"
Plugins: found file "chess"
Plugins: found file "common"

Parsed 26 text messages
Hud element 'CHudHintKeyDisplay' doesn't have an entry 'HudHintKeyDisplay' in scripts/HudLayout.res

OK, the

Code: Select all

Unknown command "cl_npc_speedmod_intime"
Unknown command "cl_npc_speedmod_outtime"
Unknown command "<<<<<<<"
Unknown command "======="
Unknown command ">>>>>>>"
Unknown command "<<<<<<<"
Unknown command "======="
Unknown command ">>>>>>>"
stuff is the only bit that looks weird in there. It does look as though there is some other config messing with things, and that may be the problem. Could you do a search for "config.cfg" files in your SteamApps folder, and let us know which ones exist. I appear to have just two, both of which contain "cl_npc_speedmod_intime" and it's brother, but neither of which are accessed by the mod on startup (one is for HL2, the other is for the 2013 SDK base).

You may want to check any suspicious looking config files for "exec" statements that can execute other config files.

Note that configuration files do seem to be synced by Steam, so changes to a previous install may affect your new one.

Those commands shouldn't be an issue, they've been in everyone's installation of 2.2.
Do you cant read me ? Not read ..
Not like whot i write ? not read too ...
Where is the problem ?

Sorry, to clarify, those commands themselves aren't the problem, but they are being run from somewhere, which implies something unwanted is being run. It may be having effects other than cluttering the console.

I'm hoping we're getting closer to the issue, I have WAY more config files than I think is needed, saying that though 2 of 'em are for CS: GO and Day Of Defeat Source

Image

I have found one instance of an 'exec' in a cfg, it pertains to CS:GO though, and a 360 controller config setup.

Well, most of them will apply to their respective games (I have about 3 games including BG2, so don't have many), which is fine, and shouldn't be run by BG2 - could you confirm the path to the last one? (the one in /sourcemods)

Edit: could you also confirm if the config file contains something like the stuff appearing in the console, or there are any config files it 'execs' which contain it?

Sorry Greywood, I've been running you in circles all day, I was under the impression that this config file did not exist... but it does, and I've even managed to mess up an SVN conflict with it at some point. (Full marks for Sebek for spotting my error).

I'm afraid I'm fresh out of ideas, the issue was not, as I hoped it would be, just a matter of a dodgy config file that steam had brought down or you'd re-introduced by accident. Sorry to have wasted your time on this.
